01. Foundations Matter More Than Facade
Implementing Integrated Business Planning (IBP) is a journey that many are eager to begin. Compelling PowerPoint presentations sell the dream of strategic benefits and it's usually a Supply Chain leader promoting it. However, in my experience, this is sometimes used deceptively to 'trojan horse' executive support when indeed it's the foundation that is failing. Here's a reality: implementing IBP without strong foundations is like building a penthouse on quicksand — it's destined to sink.
As organisations push toward IBP implementation, they often overlook crucial truths: unreliable demand forecasting creates instability throughout the system, supply plans that use optimistic capacity calculations lack proper support, and adding IBP complexity to a weak foundation doesn't solve problems—it amplifies them.
The blueprint for IBP excellence requires three essential elements:
**Reliable Demand Forecasting: The Bedrock**
This foundation must be unshakeable. Success requires consistent forecast accuracy that stakeholders trust, supported by systematic reviews that explain and learn from variances. There's no room for hidden uncertainties or hopeful projections—only data-driven, verified forecasts that are owned by Sales & Marketingt and other teams can confidently build upon.
**Supply Response Framework: The Support Structure**
This isn't about aspirational capabilities—it's about proven delivery capacity. Your framework must be built on demonstrated capacity. When your supply planning aligns with actual capabilities rather than optimistic projections, you create a stable platform for advanced IBP benefits.
**Trusted Performance Metrics: The Quality Controls**
Metrics do more than measure—they build cross-functional trust. When your metrics are sound, Finance trusts the numbers because they consistently deliver results. Operations trust Sales forecasts because they're based on verified data. Executives can plan confidently because they're working with proven capabilities rather than departmental optimism.
Like any major transformation, you can't skip the fundamentals. Each element needs to be properly established and verified before advancing to the next level. Organisations that establish proper foundations before IBP implementation consistently achieve sustainable success, while those rushing to advanced processes often face costly setbacks.
Here's your practical approach to building strong foundations:
Conduct an honest assessment of your current demand and supply processes
Identify and strengthen core capability gaps
Review performance metrics for rigour, balance, and trust-building potential
Take control of your demand-supply balancing process
Only then, execute an advanced IBP implementation plan
Remember: Time invested in planning saves multiples in execution. Companies that prioritise strong foundations don't just implement processes—they create lasting capabilities that drive sustainable business success.
